Employers, including the self-employed, have a duty of care to ensure that any electrical equipment used in the course of their work, or present in their place of work is safe, in good order, suitable for the purpose and properly maintained. The Electricity at Work Regulations states that "as may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so far as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger." Portable Electrical Appliances are part of those systems.
